"Lu sule, lu mare, lu jentu" — sun, sea, wind: three words that say everything about Salento.
Santa Maria al Bagno is a small fishing village on the shores of the Gulf of Taranto, on the western coast of the Ionian Sea, between Gallipoli and Porto Cesareo. Its coastline alternates unspoilt sandy beaches with rocky stretches, with shallow, clear water in shades of turquoise. Particularly worth a visit is the nearby regional nature reserve of "Portoselvaggio", one of the area's best-known natural parks.
Salento is also an important agricultural area, known for its olive oil and wine production, as well as an industrial centre specialised in ceramics.
In Salento you can get carried away by the scents and flavours of the land simply by taking an aimless road. Let yourself be captivated by the slowness of life here: try it, and you won't want to go home.
